Under Artemis, NASA is sending astronauts on increasingly difficult missions to explore more of the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. In April 2026, Artemis II launched on a nearly 10-day voyage around the Moon, marking the first crewed flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, traveled 252,756 miles from Earth, setting a record for the greatest distance humans have traveled in space and observing the lunar surface like never before.

They set up an exhibit at the Cleveland Browns opener on September 27, 2026 that included an appearance by Astronaut Doug Wheelock. He has flown in space twice, logging 178 days on the Space Shuttle, International Space Station, and Russian Soyuz. He is currently working with NASA to test the Orion spacecraft at the Glenn Research Center in Plum Brook, Ohio.

Inside the exhibit was an Apollo 15 Lunar Sample. On July 30, 1971, Apollo 15s Lunar Module Falcon touched down on the Plain of Hadley (Hadley Delta) near the base of the Apennine Mountains, at the foot of Hadley Rille. This was the fourth Apollo spacecraft to land on the Moon and the first to carry a Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), giving the crew unprecedented mobility. Astronaut James Irwin collected this sample which is a fragment of the original football-shaped moon rock.

There was also a model of the Lunar Module Falcon (LM-10) which served as the descent and ascent vehicle for Apollo 15, enabling astronauts David Scott and James Irwin to land at the Hadley-Apennine site.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman was also at the exhibition and then proceeded to take part in the Browns first-ever NASA flyover during the national anthem before kickoff. Three Freedom 250 F-5 jets will perform the flyover with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman piloting one of the aircraft.
