Lone Sailor Plaza and Statue in Voinovich Park

The Lone Sailor statue is an iconic symbol of the United States Navy Memorial’s mission to honor, recognize, and celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services-past, present, and future; and to inform the public about their service. The Lone Sailor statue, one of only 19 in the world, represents the sea services (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, & Merchant Marine).

It was officially unveiled at its new home at The Lone Sailor Plaza along the waterfront in Voinovich Bicentennial Park during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

Lone Sailor Statue in Cleveland

The original Lone Sailor statue took command of his station at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC on October 13th, 1987. The Navy Memorial’s Statue City Program began in 1997 with the placement of a Lone Sailor statue at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL.

Here is a video walkthrough of the Cleveland Lone Sailor statue which is on the shore of Lake Erie on the NW corner of Voinovich Park. At the end I quickly pan the William G. Mather ship in the harbor. Watch.
